What Greenwood Homeowners Should Know
Greenwood Has Some of the Hardest Water in Central Indiana
Indiana American Water’s Johnson County system delivers groundwater from limestone aquifer wells at 21 to 22 grains per gallon — roughly double the threshold for “very hard” water. That hardness accelerates scale buildup inside your water heater pipes, and appliances faster than in most Marion County homes. A whole-house water softener  is standard practice for Greenwood homeowners who want to protect their plumbing.
Many Greenwood Homes Were Built During the Polybutylene Window
Greenwood’s median home was built in the mid-1990s, and roughly a third of the housing stock went up between 1978 and 1995 — the exact years polybutylene pipes were commonly installed. Polybutylene reacts with chlorine in treated water, becomes brittle, and can fail without warning. If your home was built in that era, it’s worth having us check your pipe material during a plumbing inspection.
Greenwood's Growth Means Wide Variation in Plumbing Age
The city has grown from about 7,000 residents in 1960 to over 64,000 today. That means plumbing systems range from 60-year-old galvanized steel in Old Town to brand-new PEX in the Stones Crossing and Worthsville Road subdivisions. We work on all of it, and we know what to expect from each era.
Basement Moisture and Sump Pump Needs
Greenwood sits on clay-heavy soil typical of Johnson County. During spring thaw and heavy storms, the soil holds water and pushes it toward your foundation. A properly sized sump pump with battery backup is especially important for Greenwood homes with basements, particularly in the older neighborhoods north of Main Street.
Greenwood Neighborhoods and Areas We Serve
Old Town Greenwood
The historic core along Main Street and Madison Avenue. The oldest housing stock in the city, some dating to the early 1900s, with galvanized pipes, cast iron drains, and plumbing that's seen decades of Central Indiana hard water. We handle everything from repiping to everyday repairs in Old Town.
US-31 Corridor and Greenwood Park Mall Area
The commercial spine running through Greenwood. We serve both the residential neighborhoods east and west of US-31 and the businesses along the corridor — restaurants, retail, and offices that need commercial plumbing
Center Grove and Stones Crossing Area
Newer subdivisions in the southern and southwestern part of the Greenwood area. Homes here are typically 2000s-era or newer with PEX supply lines and PVC drains. The plumbing work in this area tends toward water quality systems, fixture upgrades, and remodel plumbing.
Worthsville Road and Southern Greenwood
The fast-growing southern corridor near I-65 Exit 97. A mix of established neighborhoods and newer developments like Summerfield Village and Villages at Grassy Creek. We serve this area regularly for both new installations and service on homes built in the 1990s and 2000s.
County Line Road and Northern Greenwood
The border between Johnson County and Marion County. This area includes neighborhoods near Community Hospital South and the commercial cluster around County Line and Emerson. Close to our Franklin Township home base with fast response times.

If you want to work with an honest plumber who will execute the job with excellence, then you need to come to Parkhurst Family Plumbing! We had a major water leak and they got us in contact with a company that would help us with the insurance process while working quickly to help resolve the plumbing issues. We have had him install our kitchen sink four years ago, install a dish washer, install some toilets, replace the outside water spigot after it was leaking, reinstall the garbage disposal, fix the burst pipe (which required getting in the slab) and also fix a bad installation of a pipe in our bathroom by the home builders 20 years ago. He does an outstanding job and will be honest through the process. He’s also come out after hours and all times of the day and NOT charged an arm and a leg. Thanks, Larry! I should have left a review a long time ago — he can do it all!

I contacted Larry around 11am because the installers for our new stove said we needed to have a licensed plumber come out and change our stoves gas line. Larry came out later the same day and had everything fixed and even helped install our new stove for us. I highly recommend reaching out to him if you find yourself in need with your plumbing because he really saved my sanity by being here so fast and helping us.

Save thousands and use Parkhurst. The big dogs in town will rob you blind!! Apples to Apples quote proves that. One of the few honest business left in Indianapolis. I will 100% use them in the future.

We had a new experience in our home last night. We used the master tub, only to come downstairs and find an absurd amount of water coming from around the air vent in the kitchen ceiling! I immediately called Larry, and he was able to come over bright and early this morning to check the problem. Larry quickly found the issue: come to find out, we had a crack in the overflow catch! Larry was able to get it fixed and did a great patch in the wall, too! We’ve never had a plumbing issue before this, but if we ever do again, we definitely know who to call!

INDIANAPOLIS WATER: WHAT'S ACTUALLY IN IT?
Indianapolis tap water runs 12 to 25 grains per gallon — anything above 7 is considered hard, according to Citizens Energy Group. That mineral load is why water heaters, fixtures, and appliances wear out early across the Southside.

Greenwood Questions
How fast can you get to Greenwood?
Typically 15 to 20 minutes during business hours. Northern Greenwood near County Line Road is closer to 12 to 15 minutes from our Franklin Township shop. We’re one of the closest independently owned plumbing companies serving Greenwood.
Is there a trip fee for Greenwood service calls?
Our standard $48 trip/diagnostic fee applies. It’s waived if you proceed with the repair. Greenwood is in our primary service zone, with no extra location-based charges.
Do you serve both homes and businesses in Greenwood?
Yes. We handle residential and commercial plumbing throughout Greenwood — homes, apartments, restaurants, offices, and retail spaces along US-31, Main Street, and the broader city.
Do I need a water softener in Greenwood?
For most Greenwood homes, yes. Indiana American Water’s Johnson County supply runs 21 to 22 grains per gallon — some of the hardest water in the metro. A water softener protects your pipes, appliances, and fixtures from the scale buildup that hard water causes every day.
My Greenwood home was built in the 1980s. Should I worry about my pipes?
Homes built between 1978 and 1995 in Greenwood may have polybutylene supply lines, which are known to degrade and fail over time. We offer free pipe identification during a plumbing inspection  or service call. If your home does have polybutylene, we’ll discuss your repiping options honestly.
