Your Tank Water Heater Deserves an Honest Diagnosis

A traditional tank water heater is the most common type of water heater in Indianapolis homes. It holds 40 to 80 gallons of water, keeps it heated around the clock, and delivers hot water to every fixture and appliance in your house. When it starts failing, you feel it immediately — cold showers, lukewarm tap water, or worse, water pooling on your basement floor.

We’ve been repairing and replacing tank water heaters across the Greater Southside Indianapolis area for over three decades. When we show up, we diagnose first. If a repair makes sense, we’ll tell you. If replacement is the better path, we’ll explain why and walk you through your options — including units that fit your home and your budget. We don’t push replacements when a repair will hold.

Signs Your Water Heater Needs Attention

No Hot Water at All

If you turn on a hot faucet and get nothing but cold, the heating element (electric) or gas burner assembly may have failed. On gas units, the pilot light may be out, or the thermocouple may need replacement.

Water Pooling Around the Base

A puddle under your water heater can mean a failed temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve, a loose drain valve, or internal tank corrosion. If the tank itself is corroded through, replacement is the only fix — a corroded tank cannot be patched.

Strange Noises From the Tank

Popping and rumbling sounds usually mean sediment has hardened on the bottom of the tank, trapping water underneath and causing it to boil and pop. This is especially common in Indianapolis, where hard water speeds up mineral buildup.

Running Out of Hot Water Quickly

If your hot water supply used to last through back-to-back showers and now it doesn’t, sediment buildup may be reducing your tank’s effective capacity. Or the lower heating element on an electric unit may have failed, cutting your recovery time in half.

Rust-Colored Water From Hot Taps

If only your hot water looks rusty (cold runs clear), the anode rod inside your tank may be spent. The anode rod is a sacrificial component designed to corrode so your tank doesn’t. When it’s used up, the tank itself starts rusting from the inside.

Tank Water Heater Services We Provide

Water Heater Repair

Thermocouple replacement, heating element swap, T&P valve replacement, thermostat repair, gas valve service, and pilot light issues. We carry common parts on our truck, so most repairs are completed on the same visit.

Water Heater Installation and Replacement

Full tank water heater replacement, including removal of your old unit, proper sizing for your household, and installation to code. We install Bradford White, Rheem, and AO Smith units in 40-gallon and 50-gallon sizes, gas and electric.

Annual Maintenance and Flushing

A yearly flush removes the sediment that Indianapolis hard water deposits at the bottom of your tank. This improves heating efficiency, quiets noisy tanks, and helps your unit reach its full expected lifespan. Our $199 package includes a complete flush plus a whole-house plumbing inspection.

Anode Rod Inspection and Replacement

The anode rod protects your tank from internal corrosion. Most manufacturers recommend inspecting it every two to three years and replacing it when it's worn down. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend the life of your water heater.

Why Professional Water Heater Service Pays Off

Avoid a Costly Water Damage Event

According to the Insurance Information Institute, about 1 in 60 insured homes files a water damage or freezing claim each year — and water heater failures are among the most common causes. Professional maintenance and timely replacement help you avoid a preventable mess.

Lower Your Energy Bills

Water heating represents roughly 18% of the average household's annual energy use, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. A tank that's full of sediment or running with a failing element works harder and costs more every month. Keeping it maintained means it runs the way it was designed to.

Get the Full Lifespan From Your Investment

A well-maintained tank water heater can serve your home reliably for over a decade. Skipping annual maintenance, ignoring sediment, and letting the anode rod corrode completely are the fastest ways to cut that lifespan short. Routine service costs a fraction of early replacement.

Honest Guidance on Repair vs. Replace

Not every problem requires a new water heater. We'll give you a clear picture of what the repair costs, how much life the unit has left, and whether a replacement makes more financial sense. You get the facts, then you decide.

What to Expect When We Service Your Water Heater

Every service call starts with a full diagnosis. We check the tank, connections, valves, flue (gas units), heating elements (electric units), anode rod condition, and water temperature output. Once we know what’s happening, we explain it to you in plain language and quote the repair before any work starts.

For Repairs

We carry thermocouples, heating elements, T&P valves, gas valves, and common parts on our truck. Most repairs are completed in a single visit with no follow-up needed. If a part needs to be ordered, we'll schedule the return visit at your convenience.

For Replacements

We remove and dispose of your old unit, install the new water heater to current code requirements, test all connections, and verify proper operation before we leave. We help you select the right size and type for your household's hot water demand. Financing is available for replacement projects through Wisetack with 0% interest for 12 months.

What Our Neighbors Are Saying

INDIANAPOLIS WATER: WHAT'S ACTUALLY IN IT?

Indianapolis tap water runs 12 to 25 grains per gallon — anything above 7 is considered hard, according to Citizens Energy Group. That mineral load is why water heaters, fixtures, and appliances wear out early across the Southside.

Tank Water Heater Questions

How long do traditional water heaters last?

Most tank water heaters last 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance. The biggest factors are water quality (Indianapolis hard water accelerates wear), how often you flush the tank, and whether the anode rod is replaced before it fails.

It depends on the size (40 vs. 50 gallon), fuel type (gas vs. electric), and whether any code upgrades are needed during installation. We provide a written quote before any work begins, and we offer financing through Wisetack to help with the cost.

If your unit is under 8 years old and the repair is straightforward, repairing usually makes sense. If it’s over 10 years old, has needed multiple repairs, or the tank is leaking, replacement is typically the better investment. We’ll give you an honest recommendation based on what we find.

At least once a year. In Indianapolis, where water hardness ranges from 12 to 25 grains per gallon, annual flushing is especially important. It removes the sediment that reduces efficiency and causes noise. Ask about our $199 flush and inspection package.

In many cases, yes. If the unit needs replacement and we have the right size and type on hand or available that day, we can complete the full swap in a single visit. Call us at (317) 517-9348, and we’ll let you know what’s possible for your situation.
