What New Whiteland Homeowners Should Know
New Whiteland's Homes Are Older Than You Might Expect
The median construction year for housing in New Whiteland is 1974 — over 15 years older than neighboring Whiteland (median 1992). That means the majority of New Whiteland homes are 50+ years old, with plumbing systems that commonly include galvanized steel supply lines, cast iron drains, and copper pipes joined with lead solder. If your home’s plumbing has never been professionally assessed, a plumbing inspection tells you exactly what you’re working with.
New Whiteland's Groundwater Is Among the Hardest in the Metro
Indiana American Water’s Johnson County system delivers groundwater at 21 to 22 grains per gallon from limestone aquifer wells. At that level, your water heater, dishwasher, washing machine, and every faucet aerator in your home accumulates scale at a rate that shortens equipment life and drives up energy costs. A water softener is standard practice for New Whiteland homeowners.
Cold Winters Are a Real Plumbing Concern Here
New Whiteland holds an unusual distinction: on January 19, 1994, the temperature dropped to -36°F, the coldest temperature ever officially recorded in the state of Indiana. While that was an extreme event, Central Indiana winters routinely bring below-zero temperatures that can freeze unprotected pipes in crawl spaces, exterior walls, and unheated areas. Insulating exposed pipes and knowing where your main shut-off valve is located are basic precautions every New Whiteland homeowner should take.
Clay Soil and Basement Protection
Like the rest of Johnson County, New Whiteland sits on clay-heavy soil that retains water during heavy rain. Homes with basements, particularly 1960s and 1970s construction without modern waterproofing, depend on their sump pump to stay dry. A battery backup system ensures protection even when storms knock out the power.

If you want to work with an honest plumber who will execute the job with excellence, then you need to come to Parkhurst Family Plumbing! We had a major water leak and they got us in contact with a company that would help us with the insurance process while working quickly to help resolve the plumbing issues. We have had him install our kitchen sink four years ago, install a dish washer, install some toilets, replace the outside water spigot after it was leaking, reinstall the garbage disposal, fix the burst pipe (which required getting in the slab) and also fix a bad installation of a pipe in our bathroom by the home builders 20 years ago. He does an outstanding job and will be honest through the process. He’s also come out after hours and all times of the day and NOT charged an arm and a leg. Thanks, Larry! I should have left a review a long time ago — he can do it all!

I contacted Larry around 11am because the installers for our new stove said we needed to have a licensed plumber come out and change our stoves gas line. Larry came out later the same day and had everything fixed and even helped install our new stove for us. I highly recommend reaching out to him if you find yourself in need with your plumbing because he really saved my sanity by being here so fast and helping us.

Save thousands and use Parkhurst. The big dogs in town will rob you blind!! Apples to Apples quote proves that. One of the few honest business left in Indianapolis. I will 100% use them in the future.

We had a new experience in our home last night. We used the master tub, only to come downstairs and find an absurd amount of water coming from around the air vent in the kitchen ceiling! I immediately called Larry, and he was able to come over bright and early this morning to check the problem. Larry quickly found the issue: come to find out, we had a crack in the overflow catch! Larry was able to get it fixed and did a great patch in the wall, too! We’ve never had a plumbing issue before this, but if we ever do again, we definitely know who to call!

INDIANAPOLIS WATER: WHAT'S ACTUALLY IN IT?
Indianapolis tap water runs 12 to 25 grains per gallon — anything above 7 is considered hard, according to Citizens Energy Group. That mineral load is why water heaters, fixtures, and appliances wear out early across the Southside.
